Foot & Ankle

The foot and ankle is a vital component to our everyday activities. Fortunately, most of us are able to get through each day with little appreciation for what we are able to accomplish with healthy, painless feet. However, all of us at some point in our lives will have an ailment with our feet or ankles that will remind us of their importance. There are 26 bones in the foot and ankle. We place one and a half times our body weight with each step. This can rise to seven times our body weight with running. We walk about 1000 miles per year. Each foot has to cushion as much as one million pounds of pressure per hour during strenuous exercise. Problems with the foot and ankle can be compartmentalized into pain or difficulty with shoe ware. These reasons can be divided into three categories, which can overlap: deformity, degeneration, or injury. Deformity Deformity can be present at birth...

Trauma Fellowship

The Reno Orthopaedic Clinic offers a one year clinical fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery. This is an OTA approved fellowship which seeks individuals from approved North American residency programs. Fellows are trained in a private, level II community trauma system under the supervision of ROC traumatologists Timothy Bray, Peter Althausen and Tim O'Mara. This fellowship provides an extremely busy clinical experience with an emphasis on adult and pediatric acute fracture care. Our surgeons treat a high volume of periarticular fractures in both the upper and lower extremity such as the distal humerus, tibial plateau and tibial pilon. As the region's only referral center for pelvis and acetabular injuries, trauma fellows should receive a strong clinical experience in this arena. Due to rural care coordination issues the clinic has a large nonunion and malunion referral practice which lends itself to multimodal therapy including illizarov techniques, bone grafting and...

Shoulder

The shoulder girdle is composed of three joints and one articulation: 1) the sternoclavicular joint 2) the acromioclavicular joint 3) the glenohumeral joint (the shoulder joint) 4) the scapulothoracic articulation The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, and is the most dependent on soft tissue balance for stability. Trauma or age-related degeneration can cause pain or disability in any part of the shoulder. Treatment of shoulder pathology, ranging from physical therapy to surgical reconstruction, is often successful in relieving pain and restoring function.
Hip The hip joint connects the pelvis with the legs. It is a ball and socket joint with the ball on top of the femur (thigh bone) and the socket in the pelvis. It allows for twisting, bending, and back and forth motions. Reaching down to the floor and putting on your socks and shoes require a nearly normal range of motion of the hips. Walking, running, and most other upright activities can be painful if the hip is damaged, and even sitting for long periods and sleeping can be disrupted by a diseased hip. Strong muscles connecting the pelvis to the femur power the hip joint and are also subject to injury. Ongoing research into hip joint mechanics and various injuries is leading to more options for treating this large and important joint. Below are topics relating to the hip.
Knee The knee is a complex, hingelike joint. With support from cartilage, ligaments, and muscles, the two bones at the joint move over each other so you can straighten and bend your leg. In a healthy knee, the surfaces of the thigh and shinbones are smooth and lubricated by joint fluid so they can roll, rotate, and glide easily over each other. Cartilage covers the bones evenly, allowing smooth movement. Protected by the kneecap and held in place by muscles and ligaments the joint bends freely.
