X-ray digital images are read, interpreted, and stored on a computer or CD. </span></span></div>

Physical Therapy

Why may I need to see a physical therapist? Physical therapists provide services that help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries or disease. They restore, maintain, and promote overall fitness and health. Physical therapists encourage patients to use their own muscles to increase their flexibility and range of motion before finally advancing to other exercises that improve strength, balance, coordination, and endurance. The goal is to improve how an individual functions at work and at home. What are types of treatments? Physical therapists also use electrical stimulation, hot packs or cold compresses, and ultrasound to relieve pain and reduce swelling. They may use traction or deep-tissue massage to relieve pain. Therapists also teach patients to use assistive and adaptive devices, such as crutches, prostheses, and wheelchairs. They also may show patients exercises to...

Pain Management Information

Physiatry did not become recognized as a separate medical specialty until 1947. Most widely known as the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the medical specialty of Physiatry comprises the related disciplines of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine and Electromyography. Both of our Physiatrists are Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Click here to learn more about Dr. Arraiz. Click here to learn more about Dr. Witmer. Diagnostic Testing Our physiatrists perform electrodiagnostic studies such as nerve conduction and electromyography. These diagnostic studies help to determine whether patients may have nerve or muscular disorders such as lumbar or cervical radiculopathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other debilitating conditions. Treatment of Pain Epidural steroid injection is a term applying to a variety of techniques performed to deliver corticosteroid medication around a nerve coming out from the spinal cord in an epidural space.
Ankle & Foot The foot and ankle is a vital component to our everyday activities. Fortunately, most of us are able to get through each day with little appreciation for what we are able to accomplish with healthy, painless feet. However, all of us at some point in our lives will have an ailment with our feet or ankles that will remind us of their importance. There are 26 bones in the foot and ankle. We place one and a half times our body weight with each step. This can rise to seven times our body weight with running. We walk about 1000 miles per year. Each foot has to cushion as much as one million pounds of pressure per hour during strenuous exercise. Problems with the foot and ankle can be compartmentalized into pain or difficulty with shoe ware. These reasons can be divided into three categories, which can overlap: deformity, degeneration, or injury. Deformity Deformity can be present at birth (congenital) and usually will be present...

Knee The knee is a complex, hingelike joint. With support from cartilage, ligaments, and muscles, the two bones at the joint move over each other so you can straighten and bend your leg. In a healthy knee, the surfaces of the thigh and shinbones are smooth and lubricated by joint fluid so they can roll, rotate, and glide easily over each other. Cartilage covers the bones evenly, allowing smooth movement. Protected by the kneecap and held in place by muscles and ligaments the joint bends freely. Below are topics relating to the knee.
Hip The hip joint connects the pelvis with the legs. It is a ball and socket joint with the ball on top of the femur (thigh bone) and the socket in the pelvis. It allows for twisting, bending, and back and forth motions. Reaching down to the floor and putting on your socks and shoes require a nearly normal range of motion of the hips. Walking, running, and most other upright activities can be painful if the hip is damaged, and even sitting for long periods and sleeping can be disrupted by a diseased hip. Strong muscles connecting the pelvis to the femur power the hip joint and are also subject to injury. Ongoing research into hip joint mechanics and various injuries is leading to more options for treating this large and important joint. Below are topics relating to the hip.
Spine The lower or lumbar spine is a complex structure that connects your upper body (including your chest and arms) to your lower body (including your pelvis and legs). This important part of your spine provides you with both mobility and strength. The mobility allows movements such as turning, twisting or bending; and the strength allows you to stand, walk and lift. Proper functioning of your lower back is needed for almost all activities of daily living. Neck The neck (cervical spine) is composed of vertebrae which begin in the upper torso and end at the base of the skull. The bony vertebrae along with the ligaments (like thick rubber bands) provide stability to the spine. The muscles allow for support and motion. The neck has a significant amount of motion and supports the weight of the head. Below are topics relating to the spine and neck.
