The Reno Orthopaedic Clinic offers a one year clinical fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery. This is an OTA approved fellowship which seeks individuals from approved North American residency programs. Fellows are trained in a private, level II community trauma system under the supervision of ROC traumatologists Timothy Bray, Peter Althausen and Tim O’Mara. This fellowship provides an extremely busy clinical experience with an emphasis on adult and pediatric acute fracture care. Our surgeons treat a high volume of periarticular fractures in both the upper and lower extremity such as the distal humerus, tibial plateau and tibial pilon. As the region’s only referral center for pelvis and acetabular injuries, trauma fellows should receive a strong clinical experience in this arena. Due to rural care coordination issues the clinic has a large nonunion and malunion referral practice which lends itself to multimodal therapy including illizarov techniques, bone grafting and infected nonunion treatment protocols in association with The Limb and Joint Preservation Center of the Sierras.
As members of a large group practice, fellows also have the ability to receive clinical instruction and surgical experience with any of the ROC orthopedic surgeons. This allows for increased training in subspecialty areas of trauma care including post traumatic Arthroplasty, Osteotomy, foot and ankle, sports and hand. Spine trauma is not a requirement of this fellowship program but fellows can work with our spine surgeons if such exposure is desired.
The ROC trauma fellowship provides fellows with a unique business curriculum not offered by any other fellowship program in the nation. Our program strives to educate fellows on all aspects of business regarding orthopaedic trauma care. Areas of instruction include such topics as trauma system management, private practice development, billing and coding techniques, and hospital contracting. Fellows meet with various hospital executives and administrators as well as lawyers, marketing directors, pharmacists and purchasing personnel. Upon completion of the fellowship, applicants should be prepared to enter the practice of orthopaedic trauma with the management skills required to establish and sustain an orthopaedic trauma system.
Our fellowship offers significant research opportunities and at least one clinical paper is required for completion. Research can range from clinical studies to the economic assessment of trauma systems. Fellows also often have the opportunity to become involved as authors in book chapters. A list of publications from the trauma faculty can be found on this website.
Fellows have the ability to attend the Annual Orthopaedic Trauma Association Meeting as well as the OTA Fellows course or AO Advanced or Solutions course.
