About Peter Althausen, MD

Dr. Peter Althausen received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. While in medical school, he also obtained an MBA in healthcare administration from the same institution. His orthopedic residency was completed at the University of California, Davis Medical Center. After residency, Dr. Althausen completed a fellowship in Orthopedic Trauma at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. He has been practicing at the Reno Orthopedic Center since 2005.

Subspecialty trained in trauma, he focuses on both pediatric and adult fracture care. His areas of special interest include pelvis and acetabular fractures, periarticular fractures, and complex polytraumatic injuries.

Dr. Peter Althausen remains committed to teaching and research. He currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine where he teaches and mentors both medical and college students. Dr. Althausen presents annually at multiple national meetings and routinely teaches the latest techniques in fracture care to physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel. He has published over 75 scientific articles and textbook chapters concerning many aspects of orthopedic trauma care.

In 2018 he received the Orthopedic Trauma Association/American Fracture Association Community Trauma Achievement Award and currently serves as the Director of Orthopedic Trauma at Renown Regional Medical Center. Dr. Althausen is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

About Nikola Babovic, MD

Dr. Babovic is a fellowship trained hand and wrist surgeon. He grew up in Minnesota, where he attended Carleton College. He attended medical school at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. While there, he learned to take care of patients with all types of ailments, but ultimately his passion for orthopedics prevailed. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, PA, and then went on to a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at Brown University in Rhode Island. Throughout his training, Dr. Babovic has contributed to the academic community by publishing numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as presenting at national meetings.

He specializes in all conditions of the hand, wrist, and elbow. He has extensive experience treating patients with common disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve compressions, trigger finger, masses and lesions, and arthritis of the fingers and wrist. He also cares for of a wide array of traumatic injuries such as finger amputations, hand and wrist fractures, and traumatic nerve injuries. He has a special interest in applying innovative treatment techniques in effort of providing superior outcomes to patients. Dr. Babovic believes that the use of minimally invasive techniques helps decrease scarring, pain, and healing time, and improves patient outcomes.

When he is not working, Dr. Babovic can usually be found racing cars on the track or in the garage fixing them. He also enjoys mountain biking, hiking, playing tennis, skiing, cooking, and traveling with his wife and son.

About Eric Boyden, MD

Dr. Boyden graduated from Williams College in 1984 and received his medical degree from the University of Nevada, School of Medicine. Dr. Boyden completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and has been practicing at the Reno Orthopedic Center since 1993. As a faculty member at the University of Nevada, Reno, Dr. Boyden has taught many aspiring medical students.

He focuses on adult reconstruction and joint replacement. Since 1993 he has performed over 7,000 joint replacement and revision cases. Dr. Boyden is a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, receiving his recertification in 2016.

In October 2008, Dr. Boyden was appointed as the medical director of arthroplasty (joint replacement) services for Saint Mary’s orthopedic department.

About Timothy Bray, MD

Timothy J. Bray was educated at the University of California, San Francisco and completed his Orthopedic Trauma Fellowship at the University of California Davis Medical Center (UCD). He was a member of UCD's full-time faculty and Director of Orthopaedic Trauma from 1983 to 1987 prior to joining the Reno Orthopedic Center in 1987.

He currently is a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCD Medical Center and maintains a clinical affiliation with the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Dr. Timothy Bray is active in multiple national and international orthopedic surgery organizations, he teaches orthopedic residents and fellows, and is past President (2010-2011) of the Orthopedic Trauma Association which promotes excellence in care for the injured patient through the provision of scientific forums and support of musculoskeletal research and education of Orthopedic Surgeons. He has multiple peer-reviewed scientific publications and books including the original article describing the development of Northern Nevada’s trauma system.

Dr. Timothy Bray’s current clinical interests are in fracture surgery and adult reconstruction including joint replacement of the shoulder, hip, and knee. He is the current Director of the ROC Foundation which promotes orthopedic research and community philanthropy, and is the Director of the ROC Trauma Fellowship which educates graduate orthopedic surgeons in the surgical techniques of trauma care.

He has voluntarily re-certified for the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery twice. He was first certified in 1984 and re-certified in both 1994 and 2006. Dr. Bray maintains an active practice at the Reno Orthopedic Center, as well as holding monthly clinics in Fallon, Nevada.

Dr. Christensen received his medical degree from Creighton University and did his residency at University of California Davis Medical Center. He also completed a hand surgery fellowship at the Merritt Hospital and Highland General Hospital in Oakland, CA.

He served two years in the United States Navy as a staff orthopedic surgeon and has been practicing at the Reno Orthopedic Clinic since 1979. I was diagnosed with keinbock's disease in my writs 7 years ago by my primary physician. After seeing several different wrist doctors in Reno (maybe all but him) with no answers or action, I ended up having surgery at UC Davis. Then a friend recommended Dr. Christensen. The very first appointment I knew he was the one I wanted treating me. Very knowledgeable and great bedside manner. I have had 3 surgeries with him and several injections. His staff is amazing. About Thomas Christensen, MD

Dr. Christensen received his medical degree from the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine, where he graduated number one in his class. His orthopedic residency was completed at the University of Utah, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. After residency, Dr. Christensen completed a fellowship in Hand and Microvascular Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, as well as a fellowship in Open and Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery with Dr. Laurent Lafosse at the Alps Surgery Institute in Annecy, France.

He is the only surgeon at the Reno Orthopedic Center Board Certified by both the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and the American Board of Hand Surgery. He is also a volunteer at the University of California, Davis where he visits monthly as a visiting clinical professor, assisting in teaching resident orthopaedic surgeons. He is currently the President of the Nevada Orthopaedic Society.

Dr. Christensen specializes in shoulder, elbow and hand disorders, injuries, reconstruction, and microvascular surgery.

He began practicing at the Reno Orthopedic Center in 2013.

Dr. Christensen has been performing anatomic, reverse, and revision total arthroplasties for over a decade. After he finished his shoulder fellowship with Dr. Laurent Lafosse in France, he met with Channel 2 news to share his expertise on Health Watch. Click here to watch the video.

About Julia Cook Beresford, MD

Dr. Cook Beresford grew up in the Chicagoland area. She completed her undergraduate education at the University of New Mexico and then returned to the Midwest to earn her medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Indiana University, where she found a passion for hand and extremity reconstruction, including microvascular reconstruction. She then pursued these interests and completed her hand surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Cook Beresford specializes in the management of the hand, wrist, and forearm, including fracture management and mass and tumor excision. She has special interests in arthritis including joint replacements, tendon reconstruction, nerve disorders, and soft tissue reconstruction. Dr. Cook Beresford believes in using operative and non-operative treatment options to improve her patients’ quality of life and optimize their function. She enjoys working collaboratively with patients to help them return to a good quality of life after surgery.

Dr. Cook was wonderful to meet and talk to at my first visit. She was super relatable and down to earth, but also very knowledgeable. She took time to talk with me and get to know me a bit, which I really appreciated. He has a special interest in the treatment of disorders of the hip, knee and shoulder through the use of advanced minimally invasive techniques, joint preservation and shoulder arthroplasty.

In treating his patients, Dr. Curtis begins by establishing an accurate diagnosis, then exhausts all non-operative treatment options prior to considering surgical treatment. If non-operative treatment has failed, he has a patient-centered discussion regarding surgical options.

Dr. Curtis grew up in northern Illinois and graduated with honors from Northwestern University, where he majored in biochemistry with a minor in global health studies. He then went on to medical school at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.

Following medical school, Dr. Curtis completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Chicago, where he served as chief resident and developed an interest in sports medicine. He then completed fellowship training in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. There, he gained experience in advanced techniques in hip arthroscopy, shoulder replacement surgery, and minimally invasive shoulder and knee surgery.  He worked alongside the team doctors for the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco 49ers, while also serving as the team physician for multiple Stanford University sports.

Dr. Curtis remains active in the orthopedics community as a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Furthermore, he serves as an editorial board member for the journal Arthroscopy and as a reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine. He continues to publish peer-reviewed literature and present to his peers at national and international meetings.

Dr. Curtis is proud to provide high quality and patient-centered care to the Reno community. He believes in putting his patients first, honest and clear communication, and caring for patients as he would for his family. Outside of work, Dr. Curtis enjoys spending time with his wife, Kate, and his three young children. His hobbies include skiing, basketball, running and cycling.

About Christopher Diefenbach, MD

Chris Diefenbach, MD is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in complex reconstructive foot and ankle care. He completed his medical degree at New York University before returning to Pennsylvania to complete his orthopedic surgery residency at University of Pittsburgh Hamot.  He then subspecialized in foot and ankle surgery with the University of California Davis/Reno Orthopedic Center fellowship program. Dr. Diefenbach practiced in Flagstaff, Arizona prior to returning to Reno/Tahoe to care for its community and participate in the fellowship training program. 

His personal love of recreation, sports, and optimizing wellbeing inspires Dr. Diefenbach to work tirelessly for his patients every day. He believes in shared decision making, ensuring each patient completely understands their condition, all treatment options, and helps guide his patients in action steps to help them accomplish all of their goals.

Dr. Diefenbach is devoted to providing the Reno/Tahoe area with quality foot and ankle care, and treats his patients as if they are a member of his family.  

Part of Dr. Diefenbach's experience includes being an exclusive foot and ankle surgeon for Northern Arizona University. He is a long-time member of various medial societies such as the AMA, OTA, AAOS, and AOFAS.
